SUMMARY
There are four categories of waste in Angers.
:
Glass (Verre)

Compost (Dechets Alimentaires)

Non-glass Recyclables (Paper, plastic, cardbord, cans)

Mixed Waste: Everything else (Ordures Menagere)
You can find the compost receptacles at many places throughout the city. Receptacles for the other types of waste are found at some spots in the city (Place Imbach, Place Herault) but most residents of Angers put the bagged waste out for collection, and your day for waste collection varies with the neighborhood. Your neighbors, owner, or property manager are your best advisors on what day and what time and where you leave your bags out. If you want to separate the non-class recylclabels they need to be in yellow bags which can be obtained at the city hall.
Quoting from a public website:
“In Angers, France, the trash and recycling rules follow national guidelines, with some local specifics. Here’s what you need to know as of March 2026:
**General Waste Separation**
– **Non-recyclable waste (ordures ménagères classiques):** This includes food waste (unless composted) and non-recyclable items. These go in your standard household waste bin, usually collected weekly.
– **Recyclable waste (déchets recyclables):** This includes cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cans, and paper. These should be placed in a separate bin, often a yellow bin or bag, for curbside collection. Glass is typically collected separately in designated containers or at drop-off points.
– **Glass:** You can recycle intact or broken glass bottles and jars of any color. Labels and lids can usually stay on, but check local rules. Glass is often collected in green bins or at specific collection points.
– **Organic waste:** Since January 1, 2024, all households and businesses in France must separate food and garden waste for composting. Angers provides options for curbside collection or local composting sites.
**Special Rules and Bans**
– **Plastic:** Wrapping fruits and vegetables in plastic is now fully prohibited in stores. Produce labels must be compostable (e.g., paper).
– **Cosmetics:** The sale of cosmetic products containing microplastics (such as some shampoos, shower gels, and makeup removers) is banned as of 2026.
– **Takeout and restaurants:** Single-use plastic cutlery, straws, and polystyrene containers are banned. Restaurants must offer free drinking water to reduce bottled water use.
**Collection and Fines**
– Collection schedules and bin distribution are managed by the local municipality. You can get free bins from city hall or use communal bins if you live in an apartment.
– Non-compliance with sorting rules can result in fines starting from €35.
**Tips**
– Flatten cardboard boxes and rinse containers to save space and reduce odors.
