Quoting my recently relocated (to Jonzac) friend Pam:
"Jonzac is a large town or mini city. Its economy revolves around its thermal curing waters, which seems to have spawned a network of health professionals in related fields. In addition to Les Thermes, there's a very nice hydro recreation complex called Les Antilles de Jonzac.
So it seems to attract lots of outsiders for this reason, yet it isn't otherwise à touristy town. It seems mostly like working-class and middle class people, not ostentatious at all.
It is a commercial center for the area and has multiple groceries, car dealers, building supply stores, dimestores, pharmacies, bakeries, etc.
There's a hospital.
Although it has a beautiful château, the town's architecture is not especially attractive in that everything is a dirty off-white. I wish it were more colorful!
What's impressive about the town is its greenspace, which is extensive, with lots of trails and areas for "loisir"...
This larger area (within about 30 miles) has an active mostly British expat group called FABA. Weekly walks, monthly lunches, other assorted events.
A couple of slightly larger small cities nearby that we really like are Saintes and Cognac. Northwest on the coast, there's also La Rochelle, which seems very special and distinctive (and is a tourist hub in summer) and neighboring Rochefort. Some other small cities 1-2 hours away that we really like are Périgueux, Bergerac, Angoulême, and Poitiers."
