Senior Residence Tour #1, Thursday, March 26th
Come visit with us at the residence where Deb and Julie are currently staying, and where we hope to create one outpost (along with the library) of our A Life in France community. We’ll meet at 1:30 pm at the Moliers tram stop (right near the library) and tram over together. After the tour , we’ll have a chance to have a ‘verre’ of something with a couple American residents who live there full time after the tour.
PART-TIME, FULL TIME OR TRANSITIONING BETWEEN: There are options for you to have an apartment here for a segment of the year, or to rent year-round (or to transition from part-time to full-time)
I have yet to have all the policy and cost nailed down, but I am POSITIVE that this residence checks more boxes for most people than almost any other option.
- Well connected to public transportation, easy to get to the center
- Quiet neighborhood, with nature nearby
- Consistent standard of accommodation; well-run, good (but not fancy) quality furnishing
- A ‘senior’ residence that pretty much just feels like a good apartment building
- Tried and tested by multiple people thinking of Angers
- Friendly, competent staff
- Avoids jumping through the rental hoops and hurdles required to find a place and, as Americans, to qualify financially, for most private landlords
- Lower than AirBnB prices for a comparable situation. (And, somewhat predictably, higher than the average for an unfurnished year-round rental)
So the first step is to see it. You’ll form your own assessment, but I sum it up as “reasonably attractive and absolutely problem-free.” I can say with great confidence that not many of the accommodation choices for longer stays (full or part-time) that you could find in Angers would merit that description.
Both options would include a membership in the A LIFE IN FRANCE community along with the accommodation. If you decide you like this accommodation, then renting at the residence through A LIFE IN FRANCE (my firm) would also include a commitment during your first stay.
- To work on learning French (You don’t have to be good, but you do have to try)
- Volunteering 5 hours a month
- Complete a 3-hour online course about French culture
Working through us, your stay will also include membership in the same kind of help and community as we’ve had on the trip, but not the calendar of events.)
As you guys know, I come from do-gooder stock. I am determined that (along with helping you crack this practical problem of where to stay on a regular part-time basis), that we act as an intentionally respectful, curious community that is grateful for our LIFE IN FRANCE. If this idea works, I want you to end up being the founding members of a community that is the antithesis of a stereotype sometimes known as the Ugly American. That is why I would ask for the commitment I describe above. My commitment to you is that a considerable part of any profits earned via your rental will go to help the English Language Library in Angers. .
I know you’ll have a lot of questions about price, availability, rules and requirements. I won’t be able to answer them now….but will soon (a week?1)
