French Regions

A NOTE ON NAMES:   There is a good deal of confusion even among the French as to what regions are called.  There are names that are historic, but no longer official.  There are departments (think ‘county’ in US or UK terms) and the larger unit, regions (think state in US terms, region in UK terms).

In addition there are other sets of names from earlier in history that are very much alive today in the way French people today refer to where they live. Many of us will more readily recognize the no longer official  “province” names (e.g. Champagne, Lorraine, Alsace, Languedoc)   than the current regions.

The older names  may have been merged to make a larger region, but retained at the departmental level (or not).  At any rate, we hope by giving you a picture of France, both with well known cities on it, and one with the official regional names,  you’ll find your way through a rather confusing univers of place names to  where you want to be!
