July 13th: Learning French as Seniors...and not hating it with Deborah Pham van xua of Feel Good French
July 13, 2025:11:30 am
We have had many people in this community suggest that we do a Zoom call on learning the French language, but I've never felt as if I'd found anything beyond the normal resources and so didn't do it. The biggest stumbling block in my mind is my own experience that learning a language at 72 is not at all like learning a language in one's your latter years. I think our guest for this Zoom will be a game-changer!
Deborah Pham van xua of Feel Good French specializes not only in French for Seniors, but for addressing some of the secondary stumbling blocks. It's not just that grammar is hard; it's also that the psyche at 60+ for making mistakes is much different. Our guest, Deborah  , has taken that confidence-lacking/mistake-making piece head-on. Join us to hear more about how one can approach language learning differently as a mature adult. If you are like me, you'll respect Deborah's expertise (she has a fabulous resume1)  but LOVE her dedication to understanding how one can feel GOOD (vs. idiotic) while getting better at French.

And whatever else comes to mind or gets asked

June 29th, 2025: How an English-speaking newcomer to France makes French friends
June 29, 2025:11:30 am

Most people who've made France their home will tell you that making close friendships with French people has been perhaps one of their biggest long-term challenges. Part of the challenge is cultural, part is linguistic, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

Mandy Torsey-Guillet, the director of the English Speaking Library in Angers will be our guest, along with several other experienced expats who've managed to surmount the considerable barrier of making FRENCH friends. The library, and its robust community has created a truly unique setting for nurturing the valuable, but elusive, friendships (IMHO, this library is the best place to get to know French people).

Like our recent call on French Faux Pas, we'll lean heavily into people's stories, rather than a "how-to" approach (as there really are no fail-safe how-to instructions on how to make a friend). If you have a story of making a friendship with a French friend, please bring it and tell it on the call.

July 6th: Aging in France, or perhaps a better frame "Thriving in Later Life as a Transplant in France
July 6, 2025:11:30 am
We will have panel that can explore a range of the options available, from the conventional (Do French have 'nursing homes and how bad are they?) to the innovative and exploratory options (What about Senior co-housing in France, is that a thing?) . Our panel is still coming together but we already have two wonderful resources. Patricia Pedditzi, a highly regarded relocation advisor located in Nice has had the experience, as a native Frenchwoman, to help her parents along two different paths: caring at home, and in an assistive living facility for each parent. KIm KD, a long-time member moved to France with her mother, and without speaking fluent French -- and they have some stories to tell as her mom is in her 80's( 1?) As usual, we'r depending on our guests to tell their personal story...not so much pretend to be experts, just say what they have lived. Feel free to bring your story, if you've lived one too!
