Resiliency skills for changing your country of residence

Along with where you will thrive, in a life in France, there is the question of how you will thrive. Changing your country of residence is a big task. It requires a great deal of resilience to move through the inevitable challenges and begin to thrive. Below is a list of "resiliency skills" that are often cited as important for weathering complex challenges (Moving to a new country would certainly qualify as that!) Please rate yourself on each of these resiliency skills: each of the factors below in order of importance to you when choosing a place to live in France.

Change management: adjusting quickly or easily to things that change
Financial management: I feel that I have a good track record for managing personal finance and am well-informed idea of whether I have the appropriate financial resources to live the life I plan for in France.
Crisis management: being as effective when problems arise suddenly
Building a social support network, which includes the following:
  • Initiating conversations – Starting interactions with strangers or acquaintances
  • Active listening – Showing genuine interest in others' experiences and perspectives.
  • Nonverbal communication – Using body language and tone to appear approachable and open.
  • Self-awareness – Recognizing your own emotional needs during a transition.
  •  Regulating emotions – Managing anxiety, loneliness, or social discomfort productively.
  • Overcoming fear of rejection – Willingness to introduce yourself or ask to join social events.
  • Resilience to social setbacks – Bouncing back from awkward or unsuccessful interactions.
  • Observing local norms – Picking up on cultural or social cues in the new environment.
  • Proactive outreach – Taking the first step to suggest coffee, attend events, or ask questions.
  • Consistency – Following up and maintaining contact after the initial interaction.
