SUMMARY:Pastry cooking lesson 1
DESCRIPTION:Our kind owner/ landladts (Annella) at the Suites Angevines has a friend\, Claire\, who is an excellent and trained pastry cook  (although that is not her profession now). \nWe will hold the lesson in the Suite Terrasse ( which is Charlotte’s apartment\, for 3 hours (maximum): preparation\, cooking and tasting. The plan is for each person to prepare 2 portions so that everyone can keep one portion to eat later. \nClaire will bring the ingredients and the necessary equipment. There would be a contribution of 35€ / person\, which we would ask you to bring with you in cash. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT IS LABELLED FREE  BUT IT COSTS 35 EURO.  (One of the limitations of the software is that one cannot list a cost of an event without enabling a ‘payment gateway’\, which is way too much trouble.) \nOnce we get the attendees  (the first four to sign up) they can choose between one of the four different recipes above: \n\nTiramisu avec préparation du biscuit + financiers\nChoux à la crème saveur vanille avec caramel + financiers\nEclairs au chocolat\, glaçage chocolat + financiers\nTarte au citron avec préparation de la pâte + financiers\n\nIf you are would have liked to join in the lesson but couldn’t because of schedule conflicts or it filled up\, here are two vendors of cooking lessons that Annella found for me.  (We don’t have experience with either\, so you should see if it suits you and do the normal evaluation you would do in any purchase \n\nL’Atelier gourmand (cuisine et pâtisserie) 02 41 86 92 40 ou 06 83 45 70 41  https://www.atelier-gourmand.fr\n\n\n2- Les Délices sucrés de Fanny (Cours de pâtisserie à domicile) 07 49 12 45 32 https://lesdelicessucresdefanny.com

SUMMARY:Senior Residence Tour #1\, Thursday\, March 26th
DESCRIPTION:Come visit with us at the residence where Deb and Julie are currently staying\, and where we hope to create one outpost (along with the library) of our A Life in France community. We’ll meet at 1:30 pm at the Moliers tram stop  (right near the library) and tram over together.  After the tour \, we’ll have a chance to have a ‘verre’ of something with a couple American residents who live there full time after the tour. \nPART-TIME\, FULL TIME OR TRANSITIONING BETWEEN: There are options for you to have an apartment here for a segment of the year\, or to rent year-round (or to transition from part-time to full-time) \nI have yet to have all the policy and cost nailed down\, but I am POSITIVE that this residence checks more boxes for most people than almost any other option. \n\nWell connected to public transportation\, easy to get to the center\nQuiet neighborhood\, with nature nearby\nConsistent standard of accommodation; well-run\, good (but not fancy) quality furnishing\nA ‘senior’ residence that pretty much just feels like a good apartment building\nTried and tested by multiple people thinking of Angers\nFriendly\, competent staff\nAvoids jumping through the rental hoops and hurdles required to find a place and\, as Americans\, to  qualify financially\, for most private landlords\nLower than AirBnB prices for a comparable situation.  (And\, somewhat predictably\,  higher than the average for an unfurnished year-round rental)\n\nSo the first step is to see it. You’ll form your own assessment\, but I sum it up as “reasonably attractive and absolutely problem-free.”  I  can say with great confidence that not many of the accommodation choices for longer stays (full or part-time) that you could find in Angers would merit that description. \nBoth options would include a membership in the A LIFE IN  FRANCE community along with the accommodation.   If you decide you like this accommodation\, then renting at the residence through A LIFE IN FRANCE (my firm) would also include a commitment during your first stay. \n\nTo work on learning French (You don’t have to be good\, but you do have to try)\n Volunteering 5 hours a month\nComplete a 3-hour online course about French culture\n\nWorking through us\, your stay will also include membership in the same kind of help and community as we’ve had on the trip\, but not the calendar of events.) \nAs you guys know\, I come from do-gooder stock.  I am determined that (along with helping you crack this practical problem of where to stay on a regular part-time basis)\, that we act as an intentionally respectful\, curious community that is grateful for our LIFE IN FRANCE.  If this idea works\, I want you to end up being the founding members of a community that is the antithesis of a stereotype sometimes known as the Ugly American.  That is why I would ask for the commitment I describe above.  My commitment to you is that a considerable part of any profits earned via your rental will go to help the English Language Library in Angers. . \nI know you’ll have a lot of questions about price\, availability\, rules and requirements.   I won’t be able to answer them now….but will soon (a week?1)

SUMMARY:Market in Place Lafayette and lunch with two French language professors.
DESCRIPTION:John and Rita Isbell have been teaching French all their lives. John is originally from the US\, by way of a British education.  Rita was from Kazakstan but taught French in the US for a good while.    They retired a few years ago\, travelled the world for three years and finally chose France\, and Angers as the place to make their permanent home.  Lovely people\, skilled teachers and recent Angevins  — they’ll be happy to share their story and hear yours.   They live RIGHT next to the Place Lafayette which IMHO is the prettiest of the town markets…and an easy tram ride from the center of town.

SUMMARY:A Visit to the Saturday Market with a Local
DESCRIPTION:We have volunteers who shop at the ENORMOUS Saturday market in Place Leclerc known by its regulars as “le grand marché” who will serve as your guide. Located in the heart of the city\, between the town hall\, the courthouse and the convention centre. It has the widest choice of all the city’s markets\, with something for everyone. You’ll find both organic and sustainable vegetable growers from the nearby area as well as fruit and vegetable sellers offering conventionally farmed produce. You can come away with fish\, flowers\, wine\, spices\, a pair of trousers or even cooking utensils. \nI am assuming everyone will come to this (even if you forgot to RSVP) and if everyone does come\, there will be 3 – 4 in each group. \nWe will have people  (visitors and helpers alike)   meet at 10 sharp in front of the restaurant Le Mail.\, which is marked on the maps with a red arrow.  The blue highlighting is where people will be coming from.\nWe also have a lovely volunteer who lives near one of the other (quite pretty\, still a good size) markets.  I’ve already decided who that is\, so unless I’ve told you you are going to Place Lafayette market then you’re headed for the Le Mail Restaurant at 10 sharp!!  (and I’ll let the helpers and the visitors sort out who goes with whom.)

SUMMARY:A History-curious Lunch after Coffee (with Hans-Jurgen\, our history buff)
DESCRIPTION:Hans-Jurgen\, retired tour guide and walking history encyclopedia\, will meet us at the coffee atthe library and then any history buffs will adjourn for you to enquire of Hans-Jurgen about his recommendations and coordinate together on what trips out of town\, or walks in town might work.  We’ll need a count for the restaurant. \nHere’s his advice about Angers. \n“Long ago”\, I wrote … I think the best way to present Angers to Anglo-Saxon visitors is with the help of two travel books\, one by Henry James (A little tour in France – 1883-84)\, and the a less prominent author\, Anne Hollingsworth Wharton (In Château Land -1911).\nThese travel books evoke the history of Angers\, from an Anglo-Saxon point of view\, they explain the reasons why Angers was known to them\, and why they came (Henry James was very disappointed\, Anne Wharton\, on the contrary\, spent several days with a party of Americans of Quaker – origin\, and was enchanted); I can show you the hotel that they stayed in and that both authors praised.\nThey came to Angers because in the historical conscience of educated Americans the city is the cradle of the Plantagenet dynasty. Richard the Lion Heart being the grandson of a count of Anjou …\nThere even is a not very well-know play of W. Shakespeare (that must have been played more often in the 19th century)\, The Life And Death Of King John; the first act of the play is situated under the city-walls of “Angiers”.\nAll this can be read during a visit of the town\, starting from the château and the tapestry (which is the “must have seen” of Angers).\nThere is another Shakespeare play featuring another Count of Anjou\, René d’Anjou – Le Roi René – in his play Henry VI\, situated at the time of Joan of Arc …
