SUMMARY:A trip to Tours? Lunch with a recently arrived local (on Easter Sunday!)
DESCRIPTION:A very kind woman name Patricia(who recently moved to Tours with her husband) would be willing to meet a group for lunch ( I would hope the group could pick up her tab).  She’s a friend of Luke’s and\, in my Zoom call with her\, seemed happy to come and meet us and talk about why she chose Tours.  If this sounds fun\, RSVP below\, and we’ll let folks self-organize the timing\, etc.

SUMMARY:Coffee at the Library
DESCRIPTION:This is THE event of the trip.  It happens every Friday at the library.  Usually 50 – 100 people come and it is the best possible place to meet locals\, both French and English-speakers.  It’s a little like a party.  If you are a people person\, this is where it’s happening.  They provide the coffee and tea  (donations encouraged) and sometimes there are goodies.   Usually they have to kick everyone out at 11am and no one wants to leave.  (It can be loud\, in a friendly kind of way.)

SUMMARY:Library Panel: Cross-cultural conversation with us & locals
DESCRIPTION:This last “panel” isn’t really a panel at all\, and we’ve designed to be an experience that tries to ‘give back’ a little.  Essentially\, we’ll have four conversation groups in the library\, with four different discussion topics\, a facilitator\, and an equal number of ‘locals’ as there are in our group. Each table will have a facilitator\, but the main idea is to have a cross-cultural conversation where you can ask one another about issues/ topics that don’t usually get discussed. I hope people can attend.  More details\, i.e. the topics of the four conversations\, are coming soon. \n

SUMMARY:AMA (Ask Me Anything) with Kat and John
DESCRIPTION:When Kat did a panel last trip\, she was dubbed\, “the encyclopedia of all things ‘how to move to Angers”  Not only is she deeply informed and helpful\, but she also has a distinct opinion on how to be a “good newcomer in France” which we thoroughly agree with and she is happy to share with you.  Also John is a genius who’s done massive renovating with the home they bought in Avrille. (Restaurant to be determined\, but please do RSVP so we have a head count) \n

The address of his office is 14 boulevard Joseph Bedier.  If you’d like to go together\, we’ll go by Tram A\, and  we will meet at Angers – Foch Maison Bleue stop at 9:15 am.  But I expect you’ll all be perfectly capable by now of getting anywhere in Angers you want to by this date\, so you can also just meet us at his office.

SUMMARY:A walk through a vineyard
DESCRIPTION:Our library friend Anne is a member of an ‘association’ that cultivates a vineyard.  She has offereed to guid us through the vineyard and perhaps visit with some fellow members. \nShe and her fellow club members will take us  a tour of the vineyard before tasting the two white wines and the honey produced by the association. (There will be an opportunity to purchase the products. The visit would take about 1. 5 hour. She recommends wearing sturdy shoes (good tennis shoes are enough) and weather-appropriate clothing for your visit to the vineyard but I can adapt the tour to the weather conditions. The address is 6\, rue Ambroise Paré\, and the winery is located within the “gated community” of a monastery. We will ensure that the gate is open starting at 2:45 p.m. For those arriving later\, I will leave my cell phone number on the gatepost. \n Anne has offered to lead a 20 – 30 minute walk to the vineyard\, and for those of us not quite that robust\, I can take that group by bus.   Provisionally\, let’s all plan to meet outside the library…walkers at 2:00 and bus takers at 2:30.  (I’ll confirm this the day before…)  Please RSVP\, as they’ll be preparing a tasting for us.

SUMMARY:Senior Residence Tour #2\, Friday\, March 26th
DESCRIPTION:Come visit with us at the residence where Deb and Julie are currently staying\, and where we hope to create one outpost (along with the library) of our A Life in France community. Let’s meet at the Moliere tram stop ( just around the corner from the library)at 4:30pm  and we will tram over together for a 5 o’clock tour. (Just a side note\, trams are likely to be full\, but frequent at that hour.  We may have to take separate trams.    After the tour\, we’ll have a chance to have a ‘verre’ of something with a couple American residents who live there full time after the tour. \nPART-TIME\, FULL TIME OR TRANSITIONING BETWEEN: There are options for you to have an apartment here for a segment of the year\, or to rent year-round (or to transition from part-time to full-time) \nI have yet to have all the policy and cost nailed down\, but I am POSITIVE that this residence checks more boxes for most people than almost any other option. \n\nWell connected to public transportation\, easy to get to the center\nQuiet neighborhood\, with nature nearby\nConsistent standard of accommodation; well-run\, good (but not fancy) quality furnishing\nTried and tested by multiple people thinking of Angers\nFriendly\, competent staff\nAvoids jumping through the rental hoops and hurdles required to find a place and\, as Americans\, to  qualify financially\, for most private landlords\nLower than AirBnB prices for a comparable situation.  (And\, somewhat predictably\,  higher than the average for an unfurnished year-round rental)\n\nSo the first step is to see it. You’ll form your own assessment\, but I sum it up as “reasonably attractive and absolutely problem-free.”  I  can say with great confidence that not many of the accommodation choices for longer stays (full or part-time) that you could find in Angers would merit that description. \n  \nBoth options would include a membership in the A LIFE IN  FRANCE community along with the accommodation.   If you decide you like it\, than renting at the residence through A LIFE IN FRANCE (my firm) would also include a commitment during your first stay. \n\nTo work on learning French (You don’t have to be good\, but you do have to try)\n Volunteering 5 hours a month\nComplete a 3-hour online course about French culture\n\nWorking through us\, your stay will also include membership in the same kind of help and community as we’ve had on the trip\, but not the calendar of events.) \nAs you guys know\, I come from do-gooder stock.  I am determined that (along with helping you crack this practical problem of where to stay on a regular part-time basis)\, that we act as an intentionally respectful\, curious community that is grateful for our LIFE IN FRANCE.  If this idea works\, I want you to end up being the founding members of a community that is the antithesis of a stereotype sometimes known as the Ugly American.  That is why I would ask for the commitment I describe above.  My commitment to you is that a considerable part of any profits earned via your rental will go to help the English Language Library in Angers. . \nI know you’ll have a lot of questions about price\, availability\, rules and requirements.   I won’t be able to answer them now….but will soon (a week?)

SUMMARY:Walk & Talk ( A Library event)
DESCRIPTION:This is a regular monthly event\, sponsored by the English Langaugage library.  In the case of this event\, or others that you can find on the library’s website\, if you’d like to attend\, you need to follow the steps outlined on their website.  There are different steps depending on which activity you want to join. \nWhen I did enquire if we could join this event  ( It has a capacity limite.) I signed up as a normal library member (You are also a library member.) This is the email I got from the volunteer who coordinates this activity\, Jane Tourolle <jane.tourolle@gmail.com> : \n“ We’re going to give Grez Neuville a 2nd chance on Friday 27th March starting at 2 pm from the center of the village. The walk is about 9 km long\, mostly flat with one steep bit and probably some muddy passages. If you wish to join\, please send me an email (jane.tourolle@gmail.com)to sign up and I’ll get back to you with more details a few days before the walk. Like previous years\, the walk is limited to 20 participants\, so don’t leave it too late to sign up. \nGrez Neuville is about 25 km from downtown Angers. If necessary carpooling can be organised\, just let me know you need a lift (and tell me where you can be picked up). \nPlease note the dates of the next walks up to June 2026: 15/4\, 29/5\, 24/6. \nRegards\, \nJane 06 86 12 21 23.” \nSo\, if you’d like to do this walk\, just let Jane know directly\, rather than RSVP here\, and mention that you are with the “A Life in France” group that’s visiting.  And that’s also the method for signing up for other library events that are listed on their website.

SUMMARY:Market in Place Lafayette and lunch with two French language professors.
DESCRIPTION:John and Rita Isbell have been teaching French all their lives. John is originally from the US\, by way of a British education.  Rita was from Kazakstan but taught French in the US for a good while.    They retired a few years ago\, travelled the world for three years and finally chose France\, and Angers as the place to make their permanent home.  Lovely people\, skilled teachers and recent Angevins  — they’ll be happy to share their story and hear yours.   They live RIGHT next to the Place Lafayette which IMHO is the prettiest of the town markets…and an easy tram ride from the center of town.

SUMMARY:A Visit to the Saturday Market with a Local
DESCRIPTION:We have volunteers who shop at the ENORMOUS Saturday market in Place Leclerc known by its regulars as “le grand marché” who will serve as your guide. Located in the heart of the city\, between the town hall\, the courthouse and the convention centre. It has the widest choice of all the city’s markets\, with something for everyone. You’ll find both organic and sustainable vegetable growers from the nearby area as well as fruit and vegetable sellers offering conventionally farmed produce. You can come away with fish\, flowers\, wine\, spices\, a pair of trousers or even cooking utensils. \nI am assuming everyone will come to this (even if you forgot to RSVP) and if everyone does come\, there will be 3 – 4 in each group. \nWe will have people  (visitors and helpers alike)   meet at 10 sharp in front of the restaurant Le Mail.\, which is marked on the maps with a red arrow.  The blue highlighting is where people will be coming from.\nWe also have a lovely volunteer who lives near one of the other (quite pretty\, still a good size) markets.  I’ve already decided who that is\, so unless I’ve told you you are going to Place Lafayette market then you’re headed for the Le Mail Restaurant at 10 sharp!!  (and I’ll let the helpers and the visitors sort out who goes with whom.)

SUMMARY:A History-curious Lunch after Coffee (with Hans-Jurgen\, our history buff)
DESCRIPTION:Hans-Jurgen\, retired tour guide and walking history encyclopedia\, will meet us at the coffee atthe library and then any history buffs will adjourn for you to enquire of Hans-Jurgen about his recommendations and coordinate together on what trips out of town\, or walks in town might work.  We’ll need a count for the restaurant. \nHere’s his advice about Angers. \n“Long ago”\, I wrote … I think the best way to present Angers to Anglo-Saxon visitors is with the help of two travel books\, one by Henry James (A little tour in France – 1883-84)\, and the a less prominent author\, Anne Hollingsworth Wharton (In Château Land -1911).\nThese travel books evoke the history of Angers\, from an Anglo-Saxon point of view\, they explain the reasons why Angers was known to them\, and why they came (Henry James was very disappointed\, Anne Wharton\, on the contrary\, spent several days with a party of Americans of Quaker – origin\, and was enchanted); I can show you the hotel that they stayed in and that both authors praised.\nThey came to Angers because in the historical conscience of educated Americans the city is the cradle of the Plantagenet dynasty. Richard the Lion Heart being the grandson of a count of Anjou …\nThere even is a not very well-know play of W. Shakespeare (that must have been played more often in the 19th century)\, The Life And Death Of King John; the first act of the play is situated under the city-walls of “Angiers”.\nAll this can be read during a visit of the town\, starting from the château and the tapestry (which is the “must have seen” of Angers).\nThere is another Shakespeare play featuring another Count of Anjou\, René d’Anjou – Le Roi René – in his play Henry VI\, situated at the time of Joan of Arc …
